MESSAGE OF THE 2010 NATIONAL PRESIDENT


Here’s a young man who lived, breathed and practiced excellence all his life. Being a well seasoned JCI member for almost twelve years, most JCI members considered him as a gentle, charismatic and genial fellow with a ready smile who occasionally popped up at local chapter as well as in regional or national meetings and activities.

He is JCI Sen. Manuel Van A. Torrevillas, our 2010 JCI Philippines National President.  Born in Tacloban City on March 23, 1970 and is married to Ma. Vanessa D, Torrevillas and presently resides in Catbalogan City. He finished his college education with a degree in Bachelor of Arts major in English at the University of the East (UE) and a second year Law student at the University of Sto. Tomas (UST) and became a member of the Aegis Juris Fraternity.  He is also 2005 JCI PRIME Course Graduate in Manila and JCI Philippines delegate to the JCI Academy in Kagoshima, Japan in 2009.

 

At present, he devoted his life into public service with values strongly shaped by his expertise in local governance having served the government for uninterrupted 12 years as elective public official. He was a member of the Philippine Councilors League (PCL) and the Vice President for Visayas of National Movement for Young Legislators (NMYL) where he was bestowed as outstanding leadership excellence award. The 39 years old undisputed third termer Vice Mayor of Catbalogan City is also the current Vice President for Administration of the Vice Mayor’s League of the Philippines (VMLP). He is one among the awardees for Most Outstanding Vice Mayor’s of the Philippines from 2002 to 2007.

 

As a public servant he attended various seminars in law making, and community management. Moreover, NP Van’s areas of special interest have been in support for working families, public education, health care, livelihood programs, jobs creation, and constant leadership training in various fields of endeavor. While private by nature, Van mingles easily with others and comfortable addressing large crowds.

 

In the JCI organization, he was able to acquire extensive and vast experience despite daunting responsibilities in public governance and acquired respect as an epitome of a good JCI leader.

 Since becoming a regular member of the JCI Catabalogan Balud of the Eastern Visayas Region on December 1998, he has served in various capacities and was chosen to serve as Local President in 2005. Committed in furthering service to the organization, he run and was elected as the 2006 NVP for Eastern Visayas where under his leadership he was able to make the region to be very vibrant and active in both local and national activities. And he was also awarded the meritorious lifetime award conferred to outstanding JCI members. The JCI Senatorship,.

With his excellent performance and utmost dedication despite being a neophyte national officer this earned him respect and admiration as a promising future good leader destined to handle broader responsibility. 

In 2007, he was elected as NEVP for Visayas Area and eventually awarded as the Most Outstanding NEVP. In 2008, as National Treasurer he managed the organization to enjoy its finest financial stability. Acknowledging his outstanding leadership and achievements, he was appointed as the 2009 National Secretary General. JCI International participation includes attending the 2005 JCI ASPAC Macau and 2008 ASPAC in Busan, Korea and as delegate to the JCI-UN Leadership Summit in New York City.

 

Finally, with his burning desire in the pursuit for excellence to serve the National Presidency he ran for the top post and was elected as the “Number One Man” for the year 2010 as the JCI Philippines 62nd National President.
